A New Application for Facebook

January 14, 2010

It’s the dawn of a new era for sharing photos. We are proud to introduce…

Today, Facebook is a powerful social utility that allows you to connect with your friends and constantly see what they are up to. We’re all guilty of stalking other peoples’ photos. Don’t deny it! Facebook also harnesses a lot of creative collaboration via social discourse, groups, events, and fan pages. However, there is a missing link between the two; within the realm of photos, there is little to no group efforts!

To fill the void, we built PhotoVoo!, a Facebook application that aims to catalyze more collaboration, more creativity, and more good times.  Our application invites users to create and participate in PhotoVoos!, which are group photo albums focused around a theme, a common interest, a shared experience, a question, or any idea you could imagine. With user-submitted photos and an assortment of playful interactions, the possibilities are endless. Friends can gather their photos from last weekend’s raging party all in one place, while complete strangers from all over the world can compare the views from each of their windows.

Within a PhotoVoo!, you can upload your best image, vote for your favorites, and watch as the most popular photos rise to the top. If you really like a photo, write a positive comment. If you don’t like a photo, keep browsing and we are confident that you’ll stumble across some that you like. As the community grows, participants with the best photos are recognized and rewarded. The PhotoVoos! you start, the photos you upload, and the awards you earn are all organized for your convenience, thus encouraging friendly competition between you and other users. Check out the screenshot on the left to see what your awards page could look like.

We’ve tried to make the application simple, aesthetically clean, and user content-focused. This should be refreshing for those of you who have explored the many applications Facebook  has to offer. So, install PhotoVoo!, find something that tickles your fancy, and get after it.  There’s gotta be a photo buried somewhere in your collection that the world will love!

‘Tis the Season

November 20, 2009

It’s getting cold in San Francisco, darkness descends upon us before the work day is over, and we’re a week away from stuffing our faces with turkey and pumpkin pie. The holiday season is here, and nobody is embracing the spirit of sharing and gift-giving more than us here at VOO!  With less sunlight to explore the world by, we’ve been stuck inside, working hard to bring you a better experience. A new and improved VOO will be released in a few months, but we wanted to give our Voozers something to play with for the holidays. Without further ado, I’d like to announce that VOO is taking a foray into the amazing, addicting, world-dominating social network Facebook.

We are working on a Facebook application called PhotoVoo, to which you’ll be uploading your best photographs before you can say “Happy New Year!” The premise of PhotoVoo is the same as our mother-site, VOO, but with photos only, and a lot more quick-n-easy user interactions. Photos will be added, photos will be liked, and you will win awards! To make this application the cat’s pajamas, we’ve added 3 new members to our crew. Currently, we’re brainstorming creative ideas for our achievement system, and I’ll be posting weekly updates to let you know how that and everything else is going.

On a much less festive note, our former blog master and member of the “Marketing Mafia”, Aayesha, is no longer with us, as she’s moved back to her beloved Bean-town. She will be missed here at the VOO office, but she seems to be happy back in Boston, enjoying unseasonable warmth and beef stew (a factoid you would already know if you followed @Aayesha on Twitter!).

I hope everyone is looking forward to our Facebook application, PhotoVoo, and we’d like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! Food comas for all!

I’ll leave you with my favorite Aayesha moment:     “Are those free chips?” – Aayesha   “No, that’s my trash” – Greg

You’re my hero! [swoon]

October 28, 2009

Are you reading these words on your cell phone? It’s okay to admit it; most of us are avid users of mobile devices. Mmm, that chic iPhone or that slick Blackberry—they’re hard to resist, no question. Waiting for the bus? Check your email. Just saw a hilarious occurrence on the street? Update your Facebook status. Lost in the city? Google Maps to the rescue! What would life be like without the convenience of mobile computing?

extraordinariesReally think about it: what are we all doing with our heads down, our thumbs lost in texting fury, unaware of our surroundings, entranced by our mobile devices? “Well, it’s modern life,” you say. But if you’re using The Extraordinaires, you’re saving the world, one tap at a time. And that’s why they get our thumbs up today. In their own words:

The Extraordinaries is a micro-volunteering platform, that allows organizations to engage their supporters via micro-actions, done on-demand and on-the-spot using a mobile phone or web browser.

So make those 12 minutes of waiting for public transport productive by tagging or transcribing or translating (and other verbs that don’t begin with the letter t). Learn more about how you can make your iPhone into your hero’s cape. Sooner than you known it, you might be considering investing in some blue tights.

Why do we dig this idea so much? Well, we here at VOO! love the idea of community (we’re trying to foster an engaged, excited, creative online community on our site). Naturally, we’re all for the idea of community involvement in the grander scheme of things. And that’s what you get with The Extraordinaries: a simple way for you to be part of the whole, and it’s fully integrated into your existing mobile lifestyle. You can’t get any cooler.

Unless you’re actually wearing those blue tights, of course.

Hi, my name is Jane. And I’m a social media addict.

October 22, 2009

laptop-hands

I don’t know about you, but I sure am a social media addict. (All of us in the office are to some degree.) If I think about the amount of time I spend online in a given week, I’m sure it would rival the amount of time I sleep. Yeah, I know, time to find a support group.

That said, I think that active online lives can motivate us all to live richer “real” lives. Whenever we go out—provided we have cameras and good memories—we produce content (photos, quotes, stories, etc.) and our lived content can turn into online content, quite easily as you know. Imagine you coming home after a ridiculously fun night with your friends; you have pictures and jokes floating around in your happy little head. Time to update your Facebook profile, right? It’s kinda like living life so you can tell a story about it later. And that’s not such a bad thing, really: there’s incentive to live more interestingly. Sure, you can be zen and live in the moment—just make sure that moment is exciting!

Okay, so what’s the point of all this sociocultural-media-pscyhobabble? We here at VOO! think it’s a powerful thing to be able to share an experience in real life and then bring it into your digital life. We don’t have to look down upon online life for seemingly replacing or stealing away from real life. We should instead recognize it as an integral part of real life; it gives us the means and the space to continue celebrating our real life experiences, immortalizing them, capturing them and allowing us to easily savor them all over again.

Now, I really should move. I’ve been sitting in this chair in front of this screen for too long. Time to go out and live. And then tweet about it.

When in Rome…

October 20, 2009

Ever wonder what to do in a social situation? Do you fidget uncomfortably, glancing from side to side to see what others are doing? Life doesn’t come with instructions, so we learn to read cues. And sometimes that goes for online life too. Here’s our own VOO-version of, “When in Rome, do as the Romans.”

Background: We admit that our photobooks are a bit confusing. The idea is this: someone creates a photobook with a theme, e.g. Things That Make Me Happy, and a whole bunch of VOOzers contribute to the photobook, uploading photos they feel cater to the theme.

testyWhat happens if someone forgets to designate a theme for a photobook? That very situation came up recently, but what resulted was testament to the beauty of collective creativity. The creator of the photobook Testy only posted a photo (pictured here) without any instructions or details. But the next VOOzer to come along picked up on the beach background of the first photo and effectively made that into the photobook theme. Subsequent VOOzers followed suit. Sooner than you knew it, there was a complete photobook with beach-themed snapshots.

So sometimes it pays to just be one of the masses.

You Are Here

October 16, 2009

It’s Monday morning and you’re sitting there with your coworkers chatting over morning coffee.
“So, what’d you do this weekend?” one of them asks you.

“What, you didn’t see my Gowalla posts on Facebook?”

gowalla-logoMaybe you’re wondering what Gowalla is. Well, think of that little “You are here” dot on maps of public spaces. Gowalla is the inverse: “S/he is here” is what it lets your friends know. Chic new bar? Funky second-hand store? Downtown bookstore? Fancy shmancy restaurant? The cornerstore? As Gowalla puts it, “Go out. Go discover. Go share. Gowalla.”

This week Gowalla gets our props for being one of the cool sites we love. Why? What’s so cool about being able to broadcast your location? Well, here at VOO! we like to think of the world/online space as one big playground. And Gowalla lets you make your own personal playground available for all your friends to know, and you don’t necessarily sound like a self-involved ass…

There’s a big difference between “John Smith is at Pinnochio’s Pizza” (as it would appear via Gowalla) and “John Smith is chowing down on a delicious slice of Hawaiian pizza at Pinnochio’s, wishing he were instead drinking a cocktail on a tropical beach while basking in the sun.” You get it: Gowalla lets you play around town and broadcast your comings and goings without overtly sounding “me me me!” And that’s the delicate balance in online social presence, isn’t it? Being able to seem unique and interesting and compelling without coming across as a big narcissistic prick.

Go ahead. Gowalla.

Collaborative Storytelling is the New Black

October 13, 2009

creativeIf you’ve visited our actual site, VOO!, and taken part in some stories, then you’ll know that collaborative storytelling is just one of the ways VOOzers get creative together.

So, guess what? The collaborative bug bit the Twitter-sphere. BBC Audiobooks America is holding a tweet-in collaborative story, with the first line tweeted/written by author Neil Gaiman. (You may recognize his name as the author of The Graveyard Book and Coraline). And, man oh man, is it in full swing! And it’s only a few hours in!

Interested? Check out the BBC Audiobooks America’s official announcement; and then go to their Twitter feed to read the developing story.

It’s cool, huh? See, and you could’ve been ahead of the game on VOO!

We’re changin’ it up!

October 6, 2009

All right, kids, I know no one wants to read text upon text upon text. So we’re gonna ruffle things up a bit. So far, we’ve been dividing our blog entries into four categories: 1) News and Updates, 2) Props Go To, 3) A Taste of Our Inspiration, and 4) Around the Office.

But let’s make our blog a bit more—now, let’s be honest—fun. Something akin to feeling like this guy:

ice-cream-coneI mean, who doesn’t love ice cream cones on a sunny day? Right? You know what I’m talkin’ about. Ice cream melting and dripping down your hand, you lapping up every last drop of richness.

So that’s what we want to be for you: your ice cream cone, just online.

We want you giggling.

We want you excitedly eating it all up.

We want you smiling, thinking, “Man, that was goooood.”

Maybe we’ve already been too wordy thus far. Hmm. Feel free to send us an email at info.voo@gmail.com, ranting, raving, giving us your two cents (or more) of what you think we should be doing. What do you want to see on this blog? What did you come here looking for?

Now that that’s covered, let’s catch you up on some recent VOO news:

Redesign

We’re rethinking our whole VOO world. How do we show relationships between stuff people post? How do we engage you, our beloved users/VOOzers? How do we make the VOO experience alive and fun? There’s a lot of head scratchin’ going on, lots of diagrams growing on our walls, lots of conferences and hours-long brainstorming sessions.

But just you wait! Sooner than you know it a new site’s gonna go POP! right at ya, and you’re gonna be wide-eyed and amaaaaazed. Really.

New Blood

Elliot (username VooManChu) has joined our team! He’s a PR rockstar, and on his first day managed to flood our inbox with Twitter direct messages and new followers. Whoa. We’re looking forward to Elliot shining with his mad skillz. Yes, that’s skillz with a Z. He’s that good.

On the same note, Aayesha will be leaving us at the end of the month (she’s moving back to Boston). She’s crazy, end of story. I mean, who in their right mind moves to the northeast just as winter’s about to start?!

Live Events

We’ll be in San Francisco’s Union Square on Thursday, October 8th! Think afternoonish, 1pm-4pm. Come out and write stories with us, take some Polaroid photos, and just let some of those creative juices flow. If you’re cooped up in an office all day long, might as well shake those legs out, grab lunch, and join us!

That’s all folks…

Stay tuned. And if you REALLY want to stay tuned, follow us on Twitter! Or become our Facebook fan!

Hugs.

Shaking Hands, Kissing Babies

September 10, 2009

News & Updates

We had our first pair of live events last week! Wowza. On Thursday night (Sept 3rd) we set up shop at Bean Bag Coffee House during the Divisadero Art Walk. Then lovely, sunny Saturday (Sept 5th) rolled around and we spent the afternoon in Dolores Park. During both occasions we were equipped with Polaroid cameras, notepads, pens, drawing pads, markers, and cards with cute little buttons of our avatars. We asked a bunch of friendly folks to start/contribute to stories and drawings, and it was a pleasant surprise that nearly everyone we approached was willing and even excited to take part!  If you want to see what cool stories, art, and photos came of both events, visit our events section and explore!

And maybe you’re wondering, “Hmm, I wonder when they’ll be out next?” Well, don’t you worry, honey; we’ll be out in full swing soon! Have any suggestions for where we should go next? Want to have 2 young, attractive, social additions to your next house party? Email us and let us know!

Props Go To…

charlie…the photobook Dolores Park Doggies!

Here you’ll find all the cute furry faces that we met Saturday at the park. San Francisco seems to be teeming with dogs, even though we are a big city and finding dog-friendly accommodations for our lovable companions is sometimes difficult. In Dolores Park, you’ll see dogs bounding about, leash free and lovin’ it.  Go and visit the photobook and check out all the adorable, big-eyed darlings.

(And if you want to contribute to another dog-themed photobook yourself, upload a pic to How Much is that Puppy in the Window?. We only need one more photo to complete it! Be that one!)

A Taste of Our Inspiration

vimeoThis week’s shout out comes from Chris, our VP of Product. Chris really diggs Vimeo, and so do the rest of us.  Not only is their design clean and beautiful, but their site has become home to a rich, creative community. And—big thumbs up for this—they’ve also managed to consistently support all the media uploaded on their site. Hell, you there are even HD options! They have content categories, user ratings, statistics, and everything you could ever want in a user-generated-content community.

And once you read their own back story, you’ll love ‘em even more. See for yourself:

“From the beginning, Vimeo was created by filmmakers and video creators who wanted to share their creative work, along with intimate personal moments of their everyday life. As time went on, like-minded people came to the site and built a community of positive, encouraging individuals with a wide range of video interests. We hope that you feel inspired to show us both your creative side as well as your friendly side.”

Go ahead and visit Vimeo, nudge around, and fall in love, just like we did.

Around the Office

will-kicks

Even though we were on duty while at Dolores Park, we still made sure to take the time to enjoy the sun and the company of good friends. Here’s Will, one member of our marketing mafia, kicking around a soccer ball with some friendly strangers.

Some take-home lessons from a day in the park:

  • Pack for all seasons. Yup, you’ll need that sunscreen, the scarf, and to be safe you might as well bring the jacket too. It’s San Francisco; 20 degree changes in weather are almost as certain as the sun rising.
  • Be wary of liquid intake. Who would pass up a day to lounge on the grass with good friends, a picnic lunch laid out, your dog leash-free and happy? Well, just be sure not to drink too much, unless you’re willing to wait in line for the grimy public bathroom. Too bad the bushes aren’t so obscured.
  • Arrive while everyone still has a hangover. The park is usually crowded on weekends, but that’s usually starting in the afternoon once people have rolled out of bed and had their coffee. So if you get there by 11:00am, you’re bound to get the spot you want.

VOO! in the flesh

September 3, 2009

News & Updates

Our first live event is TONIGHT! That’s right, kids, we’re leaving the confines of our desks and venturing out into the real world to enlist willing passersby in some collaborative art projects.  We’ll be at the Divisadero Corridor Art Walk right in the NOPA/Western Addition neighborhood of San Francisco, 6:30pm-9:30pm. We’ll be walking around and occassionaly set up shop on a street corner. Just keep a lookout for three attractive 20-somethings, clipboards and nifty buttons in hand.

And what exactly will we be doing?  Well, we’re hoping to have it go something like this:

Will: Hey man.
Claire:
Interested in helping us finish a drawing?
Aayesha:
You know you want to! Here’s a pen!

This is when we hand you a clipboard with either a story or a drawing that’s partially complete (different lines/portions by different people). And this is when you take that proffered pen in hand and contribute to the project! You’re gonna let the creative bug bite and then you’re gonna scratch the itch, adding a fun line or two to the story or making a snake turn into a flying helicopter in the drawing.  Later, we’ll post the stories on our blog and the drawings as photobooks on VOO!.

See you all tonight at the Art Walk!

Props Go To…

piggy…the completed photobook Pigs!

This little piggy went to market, and this little piggy—well, he got himself his 15 minutes of fame! And we’re not just talking about regular ol’ fame: it’s everything from a piggy bank to pork adobo to international heads of state checking out women. Visit the photobook and see various VOOzers’ takes on the theme of pigs!

A Taste of Our Inspiration

Who doesn’t love a cool T-shirt, right? Ever been walking down the street, doing a double take at someone’s shirt because it was just that well-designed or eye-catching or just plain ol’ nifty? Well, threadless.com takes this idea to a new level…

On their site, artists submit designs and the threadless community votes on the entries; the winner gets his/her design screen printed, and the shirts are available for purchase on the website. Design meets community meets democracy. Yay!

We here at VOO think the idea behind threadless—allowing the community to dictate what gets recognition—is part of the basis of building an active, engaged online space where people can participate openly and excitedly. That’s what we’re certainly aiming for!  And just you wait: we’ll have the chic and funky T-shirts at some point too.

Around the Office

This Tuesday we had lunch at Trademark, a newly opened restaurant in Belden Lane. There were only five of us at lunch, and our food took a little longer than we expected—we kept on chatting away, talking about upcoming vacations, Outside Lands (the recent music festival in Golden Gate Park), books we’ve read/are reading. But as soon as our plates came out—silence. We chowed down. And, man oh man, was it delicious! There was the resounding “mmmm” and “yeah!” coming from all of us. Every now and then it’s nice to get out of the office, you know? (Because, c’mon, we all know how tiresome eating in front of your computer can be after a while!) And speaking of getting out, it’s mighty hard to resist Rickhouse after an especially long day at work; it’s the new cocktail bar that just opened directly across the street from us. Bourbon, anyone?
