VOO! in the flesh
September 3, 2009News & Updates
Our first live event is TONIGHT! That’s right, kids, we’re leaving the confines of our desks and venturing out into the real world to enlist willing passersby in some collaborative art projects. We’ll be at the Divisadero Corridor Art Walk right in the NOPA/Western Addition neighborhood of San Francisco, 6:30pm-9:30pm. We’ll be walking around and occassionaly set up shop on a street corner. Just keep a lookout for three attractive 20-somethings, clipboards and nifty buttons in hand.
And what exactly will we be doing? Well, we’re hoping to have it go something like this:
Will: Hey man.
Claire: Interested in helping us finish a drawing?
Aayesha: You know you want to! Here’s a pen!
This is when we hand you a clipboard with either a story or a drawing that’s partially complete (different lines/portions by different people). And this is when you take that proffered pen in hand and contribute to the project! You’re gonna let the creative bug bite and then you’re gonna scratch the itch, adding a fun line or two to the story or making a snake turn into a flying helicopter in the drawing. Later, we’ll post the stories on our blog and the drawings as photobooks on VOO!.
See you all tonight at the Art Walk!
Props Go To…
…the completed photobook Pigs!
This little piggy went to market, and this little piggy—well, he got himself his 15 minutes of fame! And we’re not just talking about regular ol’ fame: it’s everything from a piggy bank to pork adobo to international heads of state checking out women. Visit the photobook and see various VOOzers’ takes on the theme of pigs!
A Taste of Our Inspiration
Who doesn’t love a cool T-shirt, right? Ever been walking down the street, doing a double take at someone’s shirt because it was just that well-designed or eye-catching or just plain ol’ nifty? Well, threadless.com takes this idea to a new level…
On their site, artists submit designs and the threadless community votes on the entries; the winner gets his/her design screen printed, and the shirts are available for purchase on the website. Design meets community meets democracy. Yay!
We here at VOO think the idea behind threadless—allowing the community to dictate what gets recognition—is part of the basis of building an active, engaged online space where people can participate openly and excitedly. That’s what we’re certainly aiming for! And just you wait: we’ll have the chic and funky T-shirts at some point too.
Around the Office
This Tuesday we had lunch at Trademark, a newly opened restaurant in Belden Lane. There were only five of us at lunch, and our food took a little longer than we expected—we kept on chatting away, talking about upcoming vacations, Outside Lands (the recent music festival in Golden Gate Park), books we’ve read/are reading. But as soon as our plates came out—silence. We chowed down. And, man oh man, was it delicious! There was the resounding “mmmm” and “yeah!” coming from all of us. Every now and then it’s nice to get out of the office, you know? (Because, c’mon, we all know how tiresome eating in front of your computer can be after a while!) And speaking of getting out, it’s mighty hard to resist Rickhouse after an especially long day at work; it’s the new cocktail bar that just opened directly across the street from us. Bourbon, anyone?
